Replacement Spa Covers?
We receive a lot of inquires from spa owners via phone or email that are in the market to buy a new spa cover because their old foam cover was destroyed by hail or heavy rain. Traditional foam covers are not designed to hold weight. When they are victims of a hail storm or heavy rain the weight causes the foam to become saturated and sink into your spa. They are not designed to absorb impact, and even though the foam is rigid enough to form a bridge across the spa, it does not allow for impact.
Heavy rain, large hail, falling debris and branches will pound down on the foam with enough force to break the cover (and it doesn’t take that much, we’re not talking about King Kong here). The foam inside the cover is not going to take the beating very well. Any one who owns a spa and has experience that with anything rigid, just like the foam covers, is going to take a beating from rain or hail. If you have replaced one or maybe even more covers because of this type of damage, you should really be asking yourself if there is something out there that won’t be damaged.
Take a look at a few other options. First, you could buy an Aluminum cover. This would be significantly stronger than a foam cover; however, it does create a storage problem, seeing as though it needs a lot of space. Not to mention, you may see people dressed up in tin foil outside your house waiting to be taken back “home,” –after all, they saw the reflection of your spa and you know, went from there.
Second, you could go with a roll cover; which will easily solve the problem of strength. Down side to this type of cover is however, they are not designed for installation. Also, they tend to trap a lot of debris inside while it is rolling open and closed and usually dumps that into the spa.
Third, you could purchase a reinforced hard cover. Which when explained is the process of gluing a board to the foam to re-enforce strength. Great news with that, now it can hold up against the rain. Two issues however that usually halt people in this route, is that again, with a gust of wind your cover will become airborne. Rain and hail also will still accumulate on the cover and saturate the foam, rendering it useless, once again.
The first solution that seems easy in retrospect is that a cover needs to be able to absorb impacts. The cover is outside, exposed to the elements and needs to be able to hold up against rain and hail—obviously they are not that out of the ordinary occurrences. Just like in the movies, when a stunt man is called to fall from a great height, he wants to land on something that will absorb his impact. Just like the air bag in a car, the air bag principle would work as a spa cover to hold up against impact damage. This is one of the biggest advantages to the SpaCap Spa Covers.
The stunt air bag is designed to open and release air when it catches the stunt person—so please do not use your air filled hot tub cover this way. On the other hand, if your house is on fire and you have to jump out of the window aiming for the large air bag would probably save your life. I should note here that jumping on any spa cover would not be covered by the warranty.
