How good is a Spa Cover Warranty?

There seems to be a fair amount of confusion about this so I am going to attempt to clarify a few important points in this article.

A product warranty is basically to ensure the quality of materials and workmanship. In our case we make spa covers, but the same would be true for any product.

I have a 1967 Ford Mustang. It would be great if Ford still covered my car under some sort of warranty but I think we can all agree that would be nuts. With a car over forty years old that cost less than $3,000.00 new and is now worth around $40,000.00 it is understandable that Ford did sell a good product. The Warranty for the car was for one year and it covered the materials and workmanship that went into the vehicle. Once it was in my possession it became my responsibility to take care of it.

I had to do the maintenance. I had to drive it responsibly. I had to use the right lubricants, fuels, filters. I had to make sure that worn parts were replaced with good quality replacements. Why was that up to me? Because it was out of Fords control. Once the car left the dealers lot, Ford could not control what happened to it.

The fact that there are not as many left on the road as Ford manufactured is an indication that not all those Mustangs got treated as well as this one.

The same is true of spa covers. The warranty covers what can be controlled by the manufacturer. After it leaves the factory it is out of our control. The end user has to assume some responsibility as to how it is used or abused.

In the case of our Spa Covers, each one is built to the standard that we would want on our own spa. The materials are the best we can find. The air chambers are made with the highest quality vinyl coated fabric. It is the same type of fabric used to build commercial fertilizer bins tarps. These tarps are put in service in the absolute worst chemical conditions imaginable. The tarp has to keep moisture out of the product in the spreader or it would turn into a huge brick. Fertilizer bin tarps tend to last about six years before they have to be replaced.

The material on the Spa Covers we build, the same as used on fertilizer tarps, is the best for chemical exposure. I have seen our spa covers last fifteen years and still the material is in good shape. Still I have seen spa covers destroyed after one year. Now bare in mind that means that the conditions of the spa water that cover was used on would have to be more harsh than a commercial fertilizer spreader.

Years ago I had a local customer burn up a cover in a year. I could not conceive of the conditions that would bring this about so I went to observe the application first hand. The spa was next to her swimming pool. During the summer months the woman would teach swimming to children from around the area. The kids that were waiting for the next class or for their parents to pick them up after class would wait in the spa.

Sure that these kids were doing terrible things in the spa, the woman would dump copious amounts of chlorine into the spa without checking the water balance first. In fact she was dumping so many caustic chemicals into the spa water she had created a toxic soup. I outlined the spa cover construction to her husband and asked that he take care of the spa water chemicals. I cannot speak for the savings he realized in chemicals however he did save himself replacing a very expensive spa cover every year. That was more than ten years ago and he has not had to buy another spa cover since.

If you are lousy at checking your spa water or you would rather just dump chemicals into the spa than check the water, you should invest in bubble floaters. The spa water will eat up the Bubble Floater which is a lot cheaper to replace than a spa cover.

If you are good at watching your spa chemicals. You only add what is called for. Or when you do "shock" your spa water you take your spa cover off until the chemical concentration has a chance to dissipate then your SpaCap spa cover should last for years and years.
